STŌK Cold Brew Coffee Review

Quick review:

YES this is good. Here are the things I like about it:

  • In a word where cold coffee drinks have at least 30grams of sugar, this one is refreshingly not too sweet (9 grams).
  • It’s dairy-free!
  • It’s ready to drink straight from the bottle.
  • It’s cold brew coffee.
  • It’s blends well with almond milk.
  • This STŌK cold brew also provides non-jittery energy.

If I had any complaint, it would be the mild coffee flavor.

Other than that: Yea, I liked it. Yes, I’d buy it again. And I absolutely recommend it!

Review: Vegan Starbucks Coffee Drink with Almond Milk

Man, I was excited when I saw this in a local convenience store.

There was NO WAY I could pass an Almond Milk Starbucks drink without giving it a try!

I love coffee!

& I used to love these Starbucks drinks! My sister would buy them for me and I enjoyed every drop.

As I became more health conscious, dairy milk disappeared from my diet.

And these pre-made drinks disappeared too.

Until now!

Cost: $2.99

Taste: Sweet and creamy. They taste just like the dairy ones. I wish there were more flavors to choose from.

Would I re-purchase? Hmmm let me see how much energy I gain and I’ll get back to you 😉

*Update: Yesss, Caffeine! ⚡️

On the health side, there are weird ingredients that the cleanest eaters may be wary of… Like cellulose gel.

However for me, I don’t really mind at this time 🙂

Will you try one?

The Best Non-Dairy Ice Cream

I love ice cream. Hands down, it’s my favorite dessert (followed by pie!). The only reason I don’t eat it every day is because it is generally unhealthy.

All of the Non-Dairy options that have become available in recent years bring joy to a lover like me!

Of course, I still check ingredients and sugar content but the fact that vegan options are vegan automatically bring joy to my heart.

But this post is not about me, it’s about the ice cream brands that I recently tried: So Delicious, Halo Top and Häagen-Dazs.

They are all delicious so they are not ranked from best to worse, per sé…. Although I did save the best for last.

So Delicious – Dark Chocolate Truffle with Cashewmilk

Chocolate! This one was good; nice flavor and it had pieces of chocolate flakes in it. I went back for seconds!

But it was hard and it took a while to be scoop-able.

I would not describe this as being “creamy.”

Would I buy it again? No. Not because of the flavor but because there are just too many flavors that I haven’t tried yet. However, if someone told me to specifically pick up some chocolate ice cream then yes, I would get this one.

Halo Top – Caramel Macchiato

I anticipated this having a coffee flavor. It did not taste like coffee. But, it is still alright.

For some reason, I didn’t finish my serving of this. I did like it, it was sweet and more creamy than the chocolate ice cream.

Halo Top has the reputation of being healthy and low calorie. Halo Top enthusiasts know what they’re getting into.

But, Non-Dairy newbies who want something as close to dairy ice cream as possible? Reach for the Häagen-Dazs.

Häagen-Dazs – Coconut Caramel

I have found the love of my non-dairy life. This one is so sweet and so creamy.

This flavor is also so coconutty that my son Legendary Khalifah didn’t like it. I was secretly happy about that because it meant more for me!

This was the smallest container..

This one, I’d day, is the least healthy.

The decadent taste is worth it. I’d really like to try other flavors of this. It’s about $4 for one container and it’s not easy to share with a house full of people.

Side note, I looked in Food Lion for the dairy free Breyer’s and I didn’t see that either, which made me sad because they make family size containers.

Anyway, Häagen-Dazs reigns supreme on flavor but it also has the most sugar and fat. Which takes me back to what I said in the beginning – the best ice cream is just too unhealthy to eat every day.

But the second bests- Halo Top and So Delicious are lite enough that they don’t make you feel very guilty to indulge.

How To Get Iron Benefits Into Your Body

The iron mineral is essential to life. That’s because it helps to form the red blood cells that are essential to the functionality of our bodies.

Anemia is a common condition that indicates your body lacks enough iron. As a result, you’re tired and cold all the time because your body is not strong enough to function optimally.

Now, for some reason, plant-based people are more prone to anemia. There’s an assumption that because iron is a blood mineral, flesh and blood would need to be consumed to get iron.

Of course, that’s not true. The Earth has everything we need to be healthy!

As a matter of fact, carnivorous iron consumption is the least effective way to get a dose of iron.

The foods with the highest amounts of iron happen to be certain fruits and vegetables. Surprise surprise!

Some iron rich fruits include:

  • Apricots
  • Raisins
  • Bananas
  • Peaches
  • Prunes
  • Blackberries

Dried fruits have a higher iron content because when the water level is reduced, the other components become more concentrated.

Iron heavy vegetables are easy to spot.

  • Leafy greens (spinach, kale, mustard greens, turnip greens, beet greens)
  • Beets
  • Beans

Beets are definitely on this list. After all, they are the same color as our blood. Don’t think about it too hard!

Other honorable culinary mentions: sesame seeds, molasses, pecans, pumpkin seeds.

Keep this in mind:

To get the most benefits from the above iron sources, consume them with some vitamin C rich foods.

Why Vitamin C?

Vitamin C and Iron are like friends who want to see each other succeed. When a vitamin C molecule senses that an Iron mineral molecule is nearby, it is attracted to it like a magnet. And then once they’re together, the iron is amplified, in a good way.

The body accepts this amplified iron much easier, it’s like the vitamin C reduces any barrier that is up. It’s all good.

Something else about the iron mineral… although it is a mineral that strengthens, also really needs to be protected. Very easily, it seems, iron can be leeched from the body.

The sure way to ensure that iron stays where it’s supposed to be – in Red Blood Cells – is to fortify the cells against free radical attacks. We can do this with vitamin C & also vitamin E.

Free radicals enter the body in various ways, including some cooking techniques and through environmental pollutions.

Antioxidants are good for protecting iron and all of the other minerals that our bodies thrive on.

Cold Brewed Conversations

Coffee qualifies as a plant-based beverage. Essentially made with beans and water; it sounds like it should be pretty healthy.

New ways to prepare old favorite food and drinks are everywhere. It’s the best when the new way is healthier, too!

Some may say that cold brew coffee isn’t new but lately it’s being talked about a lot more than ever before.

Is coffee healthy? Who knows, honestly. Some say it’s a drug, it’s a diuretic, it’s addicting, and even that it’s healthy.

The opinion here is that Coffee is okay. It gets more unhealthier the more “add-ins” there are (like granulated sugar and creamers…)

Good advice: drink more water than coffee.

The thing about coffee that makes gives me the most pause is the acidity of hot coffee. It’s just unfortunate, really. But thats where cold brew comes in.

Cold brew means that hot, boiling water is not used in the process of making it.

Using cold water cuts the acidity by around 60-70%. That’s great!

What’s not so great is the process of cold brewing requires the coffee drinker to plan ahead. Like, ahead-ahead. Unlike hot coffee, which can be prepared on about 3 minutes, cold brew goodness requires a few hours until it’s ready. Some say overnight.

However, that’s not a bad thing. The advantage is that a person can make large batches at a time and it’ll be ready to go at a moments notice.

The coffee will be cold to drink, though. Which is fine for someone like me. Iced coffee is the bees knees.

So the musings come in now, with questions of whether or not the acidity levels will rise if the coffee is then warmed up..

And then sweetening cold brewed coffee can really only be accomplished with a liquid sweetener. These are generally bad, unless you make it yourself with good ingredients.

A premade creamer will blend in well with cold coffee, if need be.

I think it would be worth it to try to make your own creamer/sweetener. After all if your making your own cold brew then you can probably do that too!

Can we discuss for a moment, Premade cold brew coffee drinks?

Generally speaking they seem to be reasonably priced (when purchased at the grocery store). And easy to drink. Too easy sometimes, especially if it’s tasty.

I find that for hot coffee, one cup is usually enough caffeine. But for cold brew iced coffee drinks, I’ll be tempted to drink more just because it’s so refreshing. Yes that’s a problem! That’s an easy way to catch the jitters.

Also, always take note of the sugar content in the prepackaged stuff. I like Califia brand, they seem to be reasonable when it comes to the add-ins.

Unfortunately they give no indication of the caffeine content. Also, “XX Espresso”? Where? Lol. Seems normal to me.

Next up is Gevalia. Seems okay.

Quick review:

This product doesn’t seem very caffeine dense. I’ve been following the directions, using 1/2 a cup (with almond milk) and it’s okay.

I mean, I loved iced coffee so, hell yeah, this rocks!

But as a caffeine source, it is hard to come up with a conclusion. Partially because I’ve been significantly sleep deprived (busy life!! Like website content being punched out at 12:34 midnight. ) And, remember friends, caffeine is not a replacement for sleep. Let’s be sure we’re getting enough of that Light Source. Seriously. That’s an order!

I’m impressed with the caramel flavor. Check the ingredients:

I am also happy that there is no sugar in this.

These have 3 flavors that I saw and this is the only one I saw with salt. So I guess that’s an important flavoring component.

Okay you guys, ironically I’m sleepy so we’ll conclude this convo with something very important:

7-Eleven is selling their luxurious cold brew for only one dollar. Take advantage!
