One thing that a plant-based eater such as myself craves from the dairy side of things is the flavor of protein powder.

Maybe that’s a little weird? Sometimes I just have a craving for it!

The chalky taste is so good to me sometimes LOL but I don’t drink them because I find dairy to be somewhat dehydrating.

But, I was in Whole Foods looking for a cold and cool looking drink. This looked to fit the bill!

Would I finally taste a satisfying vegan protein drink?

Is Quorn Good? (Product review!)

Quorn veggie food products are meal staples for lots of vegetarians. They now also have no-egg foods available so vegans can also get in on the action πŸ™‚

There are over ten tasty products available by Quorn. I’m going to go over these four today and then update this post as I try the rest!

Quorn is definitely plant based as the key protein source used here is called Mycoprotein – a single-cell organism sort of like fungi. There are articles that suggest it’s a type of mold. One of the things that make this type of protein unique is the texture. The way the proteins grow make for a tender mouth-feel, as opposed to soy which had spun proteins that produce a distinct ‘chew’.

According to the food package, some people have adverse allergy-type reactions when they consume Mycoprotein.

In my house, we’re not allergic and we enjoy these products as a cool alternative to soy-based veggie burgers etc.

Being less familiar with their vegan foods, I couldn’t wait to try these spicy chik’n patties.

Upon tasting I found out that they are not very spicy. They also are a little dry, I needed extra ketchup. And they’re small in diameter as well.

Would I buy again? Sure, if I needed a chik’n product this were the only one available πŸ™‚

Next, these grounds:

This is good for all types of things! We like tacos around here and this is what we commonly use for the “meat”.

Grounds are also tasty for hamburger helper type of meals as well as pasta and chili 🌢️ That reminds me, I make a great Chipotle chili! I should do that again soon hmmmm…

Now, what about these?

I recently tasted a stir-fry made with these and it was wonderful. The application for these are pretty universal, honestly. They’re great in pot pies and casseroles. Good for those times when meat eaters and vegans share a meal together.

Asian spices go really well too. Hellooo sweet chili oil!

Last up:

Yup, my plant-based son Legendary loves these. It’s nice to be able to give him a popular food that is not made with the popular crappy ingredients.

Trying Graze Snacks

My son and I had the pleasure to try these snacks!

Snacks are always a good idea to have near. That’s extra true when you really try to eat healthy.

I first heard about Graze snacks as a subscription box service a couple of years ago (I think!).

However, I don’t have a subscription. I saw some of these snacks on sale at CVS Pharmacy. I bought one sweet flavor and one savory.

Today, my son, Legend, and I tried them!

First, we had the sweet:

These oat squares had the texture of a chewy granola bar. The cacao flavor really came through strongly! As well as the cranberry and vanilla.

I loved it! Legend didn’t enjoy it as much. I think that he likes his treats sweeter. Because these were not very sweet, which is one thing I really loved about it.

I think we saved the best for last – a crunchy snack mix:

Legend and I both wanted more of these! It was so good, pleasantly crunchy and crisp. Although, not very spicy, I would have enjoyed a little more peppery kick. However, the makers know what they’re doing, flavor-wise. I could eat a 2 pound bag of this mix! πŸ™‚

Over all, yes these are good and highly recommended.

Nuts and Seeds

What is the difference between a seed and a nut? Some say that seeds grow on the outside of a fruit while nuts grow on the inside. Or, is it the other way around?

It’s a bit confusing!

Here at Easy Light Sources, nuts and seeds fall into the same category of being a nice plant-based source of protein.

Having one or two types of nuts and seeds available is a pantry staple for most vegans. They can be used creatively in a lot of ways or just eaten raw. Or roasted. Or whipped up into a nut butter (assuming you are the owner of a boss food processor).

We can talk about a few of them but usually they are interchangeable in recipes. There is a high risk of redundant information.

Commonly made into nut-milks: Almonds, cashews, walnuts, brazil nuts.

Commonly made into pie crusts: Almonds, walnuts, pecans

Commonly made into [raw] pie filling: Cashews, brazil nuts, macadamia nuts

Commonly made into something savory: Cashews, walnuts, sunflower seeds, brazil nuts

They are heavy in desserts and its easy to consume a lot of nuts when it is disguised as a slice of pie. Be conservative with the portions πŸ™‚

Soak nuts before you use them to eliminate some phytic acid.
