Should We Eat Burnt Food?

Have you ever burned something and told people to eat it anyway because it “added flavor?”

Or maybe, more realistically, the food is burnt but you didn’t feel like cooking some different. Or maybe you don’t even have enough ingredients for a second dish.

Whatever the case, the burnt food is on the menu tonight! Or today. Or for lunch. You get what I’m saying ๐Ÿ™‚

But, should we be eating it? I’ve heard all sorts of theories that burnt food can actually cause cancer. Scary, right?! This was actually geared toward smoked and grilled food. Char-grilled, to be exact. But I do have to say that I really enjoy the taste of food that was cooked over charcoal. It’s just really flavorful to me.

But let’s take it down a notch.

What about burnt soup? Should we eat burnt soup?

What is for certain is that making an entire pot of food would be a lot of waste to go down the proverbial drain. A waste of time and money spent.

Powering through the taste and eating it anyway is the most logical choice honestly. Eat it!

Someone said that adding raw onion to a soup will “absorb” the burnt flavor. But I can’t testify to that. Adding more seasoning is also something that I don’t think makes it better.

Some foods are more forgiving, though.

And also, there are levels to burnt-ness.

Sometimes the food is so burnt that it’s hard and crunchy and will break your teeth. That stuff, not even a pet will eat. So, throw it away.

More crunchy than you’d like it to be also does not mean something is burnt.

True burnt food as a truly burnt flavor. You know what it tastes like!

To answer the title question: Should We Eat Burnt Food? Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I have enough energy to make something else?
  • Do I have enough ingredients to make something else?
  • Will eating this harm my teeth?
  • Is the flavor overpoweringly burnt?
  • Will this even matter tomorrow?

Sometimes there are bigger things in life than burnt food. Go ahead and eat it and then move on with you life.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Burnt dessert’s dont have the same grace. But, you know, if you have a burnt dinner, something tasty and sweet will make it extra okay ๐Ÿ™‚

Blueberry Muffin and Carrot Cake Larabars

Larabars are one of the original “simple ingredient and vegan” food bars. We can’t really call these a protein bar, although Larabar does make those now.

These are solid food bars. The main ingredient tends heavily to be dates.

You know dates.. the somewhat sticky and moisture-less fruit with a seed in it. Larabars and raw/vegan pie crusts are generally the only way that I’ll eat dates. On their own, they are not my style. In desserts and natural smoothies, I can get down with them all day.

Larabars also have some kind of nuts in them as well. Usually cashews or almonds. Sometimes walnuts if we’re lucky!

Today, let’s talk about two different and tasty? flavors of Larabar!

First, the Carrot Cake.

There are real carrots in these and it’s in a good way. Carrots, being already naturally sweet, add depth to the dates that are also used.

the texture of these bars are soft, too. Softer than usual maybe. It’s all in a good way though.

The Blueberry Muffin was a little more interesting, texture wise. The almonds used added a crunch to the bars.

This blueberry bar was also more.. dry? than the carrot cake. It’s not that it was crumbly, but there was a lack of moisture.

And, that’s what makes the difference as far as which one I am likely to re-purchase again.

Because flavor-wise, they are both delicious. I enjoyed both and I’d eat either one again.

But if I had to choose, I’d go with the carrot cake flavor.

I mean, I really like carrot cake. And the texture is more like what actual carrot cake is, moist and dessert level sweetness.

The blueberry muffin bars were tasty but as far as my understanding goes, I don’t recall there being chunks of almonds in a baked muffin.

Anyway, as a side note I’d like to give a shout out to my all time favorite Larabar flavor – Pineapple Upside Down Cake! Yummm, too back they’re not sold or available anywhere near me.

Anyway, thanks for reading!

Review: Vegan Starbucks Coffee Drink with Almond Milk

Man, I was excited when I saw this in a local convenience store.

There was NO WAY I could pass an Almond Milk Starbucks drink without giving it a try!

I love coffee!

& I used to love these Starbucks drinks! My sister would buy them for me and I enjoyed every drop.

As I became more health conscious, dairy milk disappeared from my diet.

And these pre-made drinks disappeared too.

Until now!

Cost: $2.99

Taste: Sweet and creamy. They taste just like the dairy ones. I wish there were more flavors to choose from.

Would I re-purchase? Hmmm let me see how much energy I gain and I’ll get back to you ๐Ÿ˜‰

*Update: Yesss, Caffeine! โšก๏ธ

On the health side, there are weird ingredients that the cleanest eaters may be wary of… Like cellulose gel.

However for me, I don’t really mind at this time ๐Ÿ™‚

Will you try one?

The Best Non-Dairy Ice Cream

I love ice cream. Hands down, it’s my favorite dessert (followed by pie!). The only reason I don’t eat it every day is because it is generally unhealthy.

All of the Non-Dairy options that have become available in recent years bring joy to a lover like me!

Of course, I still check ingredients and sugar content but the fact that vegan options are vegan automatically bring joy to my heart.

But this post is not about me, it’s about the ice cream brands that I recently tried: So Delicious, Halo Top and Hรคagen-Dazs.

They are all delicious so they are not ranked from best to worse, per sรฉ…. Although I did save the best for last.

So Delicious – Dark Chocolate Truffle with Cashewmilk

Chocolate! This one was good; nice flavor and it had pieces of chocolate flakes in it. I went back for seconds!

But it was hard and it took a while to be scoop-able.

I would not describe this as being “creamy.”

Would I buy it again? No. Not because of the flavor but because there are just too many flavors that I haven’t tried yet. However, if someone told me to specifically pick up some chocolate ice cream then yes, I would get this one.

Halo Top – Caramel Macchiato

I anticipated this having a coffee flavor. It did not taste like coffee. But, it is still alright.

For some reason, I didn’t finish my serving of this. I did like it, it was sweet and more creamy than the chocolate ice cream.

Halo Top has the reputation of being healthy and low calorie. Halo Top enthusiasts know what they’re getting into.

But, Non-Dairy newbies who want something as close to dairy ice cream as possible? Reach for the Hรคagen-Dazs.

Hรคagen-Dazs – Coconut Caramel

I have found the love of my non-dairy life. This one is so sweet and so creamy.

This flavor is also so coconutty that my son Legendary Khalifah didn’t like it. I was secretly happy about that because it meant more for me!

This was the smallest container..

This one, I’d day, is the least healthy.

The decadent taste is worth it. I’d really like to try other flavors of this. It’s about $4 for one container and it’s not easy to share with a house full of people.

Side note, I looked in Food Lion for the dairy free Breyer’s and I didn’t see that either, which made me sad because they make family size containers.

Anyway, Hรคagen-Dazs reigns supreme on flavor but it also has the most sugar and fat. Which takes me back to what I said in the beginning – the best ice cream is just too unhealthy to eat every day.

But the second bests- Halo Top and So Delicious are lite enough that they don’t make you feel very guilty to indulge.
